Who qualifies for home care?
A person qualifies for homecare when s/he needs a skilled service performed by a registered nurse (for example, teaching about new medications or dressing a wound) or a physical or occupational therapist (for example, strengthening or use of a wheelchair). What home care services are available?
River Valley HomeCare services are provided to young children, adolescents, and adults of all ages. Please contact us to learn if the service you need is available through our agency. Our professional caregivers include:

• Skilled nurses
• Certified home health aides
• Physical therapists
• Occupational therapist
• Speech therapist
• Licensed medical social worker

How are services started?
There are several ways to start home care services. Federal regulations require that your doctor must order them by way of a service referral that can be obtained any one of three ways:

• You can ask your physician to call River Valley HomeCare and give a referral for services. We will then contact you and arrange a time to visit you in your home to start care.
• You, a family member or a friend can call River Valley HomeCare directly. You, or someone calling on your behalf, can speak with a nurse who will contact your physician for a referral. Then you will be contacted to arrange a time to visit you in your home to start care.
• Before you leave the hospital, your physician may make a referral to River Valley HomeCare as part of your discharge plan. The hospital nurse or social worker can make a referral in this case. When you get home, River Valley HomeCare will contact you to arrange a time (usually the next day) to visit you in your home to start care.

We work with you, your family and your physician to help you recover from an illness, an injury, or surgery. Additionally, our professional caregivers are trained to provide skilled care to those who are terminally ill.

Who pays for home care?
Medicare, MaineCare and most private insurers will pay for skilled home health care if the person insured meets specific criteria. Our intake staff can assist you or your doctor’s office in determining insurance coverage for the home care services you need.
